Abstract
One of the remarkable properties of plasmonic nanostructures is that they can concentrate light at the nanometer scale and massively enhance the local optical fields. This has led to many important applications, such as molecular sensing, light harvesting in solar cells, superresolution optical imaging, data storage and lithography etc. This talk will introduce the principles, applications and challenges associated with nanoplasmonics. Another fascinating properties of plasmonic nanostructures and metamaterials is that they can manipulate the propagation of light with degrees unattainable with natural materials, leading to many extraordinary optical phenomena, such as negative refraction, cloaking, and superoscillation focusing etc. I will also give an introduction of some of these exotic optical phenomena.

Biography
Dr. Fumin Huang is currently a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast. He obtained PhD degree at King’s College London in 2005. He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees at Peking University in China. Before joining Queen’s as an academic staff, he had several years’ postdoctoral research experience at the Optoelectronic Research Centre at University of Southampton and the Nanophotonics Centre at Cavendish Laboratory of University of Cambridge. His research interests are mainly in nanophotonics, involving plasmonics, metamaterials,near-field microscopy and superoscillation optics. Now he is a member of the Institute of Physics and a member of the Optical Society of America.
